ABOUT VOYAGEUR/ALMANAC
Folk stories are a universal way in which civilizations tell stories about their people. There is a rich collection of folkloric customs, beliefs, and traditional materials all over the world; I’m interested specifically in learning more about how these stories differ from one cultural geo-location to another and especially how they can be incorporated into new visual stories as I conjure alternative narratives. Taking the form of large scale, site-specific installations, I create immersive environments with a multitude of characters. Employing a mix of both collage and sculpture, the silhouettes of human and animal forms are constructed from a variety of source material. Spanning science, literature, and historical photography, the characters within the staging reference a diverse set of stories – extending to creation myths, autobiographical accounts, and forgotten or lesser known H/histories. Like the stories we tell ourselves do shift and transform over time, at the center of my work remains a fundamental question – How does one try to reconcile the complex, and often times conflicting elements of one’s own identity? My inspiration for comes from a natural trajectory within my practice. It’s by researching creation myths and folklore that “Voyageur / Almanac” has come to light. Both projects explore themes related to identity, as it relates to our knowledge of various H/histories, and how our vision of the past can impact our conceptions. I’m now contemplating how the complexity of human life and storytelling is entangled with nature and our ecological surroundings. Symbiotic relationships and natural forces are referenced in my current work, but I want to slightly shift the focus away from folk stories and extend towards the study of predictions, scientific, or unscientific and not? , with visual references to geology, earth science, mapping, weather events and topography added to my choreographic installations. I'll study forecasts, data pertaining to ocean tides or astronomical cycles, calendars, tide tables, or farmer’s almanacs of the past and present. «Voyageur» is my stand-in metaphor for these stories, individuals, cultures, entire peoples, or civilizations that travel figuratively and symbolically through both space and time. What was projected into the future by past peoples? What has come true? What hasn’t? What could? For "Voyageur / Almanac", I'll research and explore the connections and entanglements between human life, nature, and our ecological surroundings. This will be part of a multi-faceted project exploring culture’s influence on the formation of identity, which is rooted in ideas of my current body of work, “Wanderings-Errances” (2019-20), but is now sprouting in new directions. |
