Shapeshifter at nuit blanche toronto - october 1, 2022

Picture
SHAPESHIFTER - NUIT BLANCHE
Anna Binta Diallo will have comisisoned works shown as part of this year's Nuit Blanche in Toronto.

Shapeshifter is a series of sculptural works that expands the investigation into folklore, history, personal mythology, and how identity constantly fluctuates.

The ProjectShapeshifter: described as one that seems able to change form or identity at will, or a mythical figure that can assume different forms, as of animals (Merriam-Webster). The works within Shapeshifter continue to expand on folklore, language, history, and transcultural identity. By assembling imagery from a diverse set of archival sources, this series takes the form of a large-scale, immersive installation of sculptural works, interspersed along a path in downtown Toronto. With Shapeshifter, Diallo explores how in different situations people often transform themselves as they are always intertwined in their own histories. They mutate, morph, and are constantly shapeshifting, and as such, they might seem to float on alone like dust particles in space, but together are bound by time.

Inauguration de l’oeuvre d’art public à montréal 25 AOÛT 2022

Picture

DAK'ART OFF / HABITER LE MONDE : ESQUISSE D'UNE RENCONTRe MAY 21 - june 04 2022

THE MAISON DES CULTURES
URBAINES DE OUAKAM
DAKAR, SENEGAL

Habiter le Monde : esquisse d’une rencontre (Inhabiting the World: Outline of an Exchange) is a reflection on the act of inhabiting a site, a space, a body, a geography. To live there by “choosing” modalities that allow us to become one with the territory on which we have chosen—or not—to reside.
For us, african and afro-descendant people who are part of this project, Montréal is the territory we cohabit. It is from here that I, you, he, she, we consider the world. It is from here that day to day our stories take root in a space that is as complex as the afro-descendant communities that live here.
In keeping with Felwine Sarr’s essay on interpersonal politics1, which invites us to renew the imaginary relationship we build with our fellow human beings and all living things, my curatorial proposal—which I think of as a visual art essay—raises questions about power issues that exist within a given territory. More specifically, it questions the long-term effects these issues have and the ways in which they shape us.

Drawing from their individually distinct North American realities, each of the artists in this exhibition present single or multiple works that foreground the singularity of their personal experiences. Through these distinct journeys, these voices express the plurality and complexity of our experiences and become an outline for a broader reflection.
- Moridja Kitenge Banza (translated by : Jo-Anne Balcaen)

In a social and political moment where opinions are often divisive, the possibility of finding common ground can seem beyond reach. Debates over human rights, climate change, land claims, and even the politicizing of the pandemic often seem at cross-purposes and irresolvable. How do we respond in times of uncertainty—when do we push forward, when do we give up, and when do we try things differently? In The Further Apart Things Seem, artists follow distinct paths toward subtle forms of resistance, while exploring areas of connection between that which feels disconnected or in opposition. By testing the unexpected, they embrace material experimentation and provisionality as productive spaces for building resilience, resolution, and understanding.

Anna Binta Diallo selected to partcipate in the 13th edition of the African biennial of photography.

The Bamako Encounters will pay a powerful tribute to the spaces in between, to that which defies definition, to phases of transition, to being this and that or neither and both, to becoming, and to difference and divergence in all their shades. Accordingly, Amadou Hampâté Bâ’s statement (Aspects de la civilisation africaine, Éditions Présence Africaine, 1972) presiding over the manifestation, Maa ka Maaya ka ca a yere kono, translates to, “the persons of the person are multiple in the person.”

Roughly 75 artistic positions from the African art world have been invited to contribute to this edition’s multiplicity.

ANNA BINTA DIALLO: WANDERINGS
Curated by Blair Fornwald, Director/Curator

October 14 to December 4, 2021
A work with seemingly limitless bounds, Anna Binta Diallo’s Wanderings is comprised of an expansive collection of human and animal figures referencing folk stories, primarily from the artist’s Senegalese and French Métis heritage. These figures are collaged from celestial and terrestrial maps and images, charts, diagrams, illustrations, and texts. Diallo draws from a vast archive, attesting to a collective impulse to describe, classify, and hierarchize, to make sense and order out of complexity and chaos, a process that is both deeply human and deeply flawed.
With each iteration of Wanderings, Diallo creates new narratives, teasing out affinities and disjunctures with and between mythologies and bodies of knowledge. Refusing to privilege one system over another, her work points to the ways they are connected, and to the complexity of human experience and identity.

Starting on October 12, the VAC is pleased to announce the opening of a new public sculpture initiative from the earth we grow. This project will present free outdoor art installations on the VAC grounds in the upcoming fall until 2022. Taking inspiration from untold, little-known, or oft-ignored BIPOC events, stories, and activists within Canadian history, three artists will create interactive, challenging, and historically critical public outdoor sculptures. Bowmanville-based Inuk artist Couzyn van Heuvelen, Montreal-based artist Anna Binta Diallo, and Richmond-Virginia-based artist Sandy Williams IV have been invited to present works in response to historically-ignored histories within Canada's many diverse communities.

Intended to serve both local and greater communities, the project will see the VAC invite over 70 schools for pre-scheduled educational exhibition tours for visiting classes. The project will offer audiences and participating educational institutions personal tours that will expand on each work’s significance, background, and artistic intent. Selected writers including Kristy Triner, Josephine Dennis, and Yaniya Lee will present new critical responses to each work, available in October online.

Virtual Tours of the exhibition will also be made available.

A virtual exhibition presented by McMaster Museum of Art and Nia Centre for the Arts.

the cut, the tear & the remix: contemporary collage and Black futures brings together the work of eight contemporary artists deeply engaged in the excavation of a future informed by their individual ancestral connections to the African and Caribbean diaspora and their varied interpretations of collage. This online exhibition presents “cut & paste” techniques in not only its traditional tactile paper and photomontage iterations, but also in uncharacteristic expressions of new media including video, text and design. The digital presentation of the remix, as a result of current global circumstances, is in and of itself an envisioning of the future of Black spatial and temporal experiences marking an invitation to participate in this new imagining.

April 2021 - Wanderings at Muesum London April 3 to August 29

Picture
Picture

The Wanderings collages are mainly wall-mounted forms produced in a variety of sizes. They contain references to the cosmos, bright design patterns, and excerpts of texts. Diallo collects these from diverse archival sources, including online and found materials. Taken together, her semi-silhouettes set form and symbolism in flux. Not surprisingly, Wanderings is an iterative project, changing in relation to its architectural context across different exhibitions. And while the artist sometimes groups elements together, there is no linear reading. Even the flatness of the shapes and the negative spaces that surround them are important in making or breaking dreamlike connections. As Diallo says, “Erasing, rewriting, and recreating are always in my head and drive my practice.”

Diallo’s work has been featured in numerous publications such as Canadian Art, PaperWait, and Musagetes. She exhibits nationally and internationally, including the forthcoming Mission Dakar, guest curated by artist Moridja Kitenge Banza for the Montreal Arts Council and Gallery CLARK, Montreal, in relation to the Dakar Biennale. Wanderings has appeared in diverse forms at galleries and public spaces in Vancouver, Montreal, Winnipeg, and Finland.

Wanderings: Anna Binta Diallo and Noor Bhangu in Dialogue

Presented by C Magazine
and Partners in Art (PIA)

4pm-5pm ESTPlease register here to receive Zoom link.
Partners in Art (PIA) and C Magazine are proud to present a dialogue between artist Anna Binta Diallo and guest curator Noor Bhangu, exploring the former’s Artist Project in C’s most recent issue 148 “Body Language.” Diallo is one of many artists in recent years to use the archive to explore how identity has become history, to investigate the relationship between image and knowledge production, and to radically disorient histories that have been falsely presented as complete. Her work embodies a move toward relationality that is vital for creating pathways to a less divided future. In it, there is a clear message that identity is not singular but dispersed. Diallo and Bhangu will reflect on their positions as artist and curator, and the ways in which this collaboration led to the emergence of new characters and narratives within the artist’s ongoing series Wanderings. Holding up key moments of research alongside specific elements in the work, both the speakers will discuss their approaches to archives as sites of learning, relation, and intimacy.

In this project, a collection of collages in motion collapse the boundaries of discrete historical narratives to offer a more expansive field of cross-cultural encounters and relations. The series encompasses archetypes and stories from Franco-Canadian, Métis, and West African traditions, yet moves beyond the tight corset of identity politics towards a more rhizomatic approach. Culled from diverse origins, figures are emptied of their symbolic contents and opened for alternative meanings. Accompanied by a text by Bhangu, Wanderings probes questions around representation and opacity: How do stories, and histories, of otherness travel? And ultimately, who has the right to opacity, a mode of making opaque that which is irreducible? Through assemblage, multiple histories are brought together to visualize intimate possibilities, tensions, and mutualities.

Partners in Art (PIA) and C Magazine are excited to present a talk exploring the Artist Project in the most recent issue 148 “Body Language.” This conversation offers insight into the newest iteration of Anna Binta Diallo’s project, Wanderings, curated by Noor Bhangu.
The dialogue will be followed by a Q&A.

March 17, 2021 Barbara Spohr Award Recipients Announced

March 17, 2021 | Banff, Alberta.

Walter Phillips Gallery at Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity is pleased to announce Anna Binta Diallo and Logan MacDonald as the recipients of the 2020/21 Barbara Spohr Memorial Award. Created by the friends and family of the late artist Barbara Spohr, the biennial award provides Canadian artists working in photography with a prize of $6000 CAD in value towards a residency in Visual Arts at Banff Centre.

"I am honored to be one of the recipients of the Barbara Spohr Memorial Award. This is a celebratory moment in which I am reminded of the importance of support in the Arts. We live in a moment where we need imaginative storytelling as much as ever, the kind of artistic expressions that can help us understand the complexities of our coexistence. I will follow these guiding principles as I conduct the research and exploration that this award has afforded me the opportunity to do, many thanks to the Banff Centre for its recognition and support, and to artists like Barbara Spohr who continue to nurture creativity with their legacy."
- Anna Binta Diallo

Open to artists who have attended Visual Arts residency programs in the previous two years, the award is intended to encourage the development of Canadian contemporary photography by providing financial assistance to an artist whose work has the potential to make a significant contribution to the field.

February 2021 - Anna Binta diallo receives a Black Designers of Canada Excellence award!

Renowned footwear designer and creator of Black Designers of Canada, George Sully, continues to emphasize the importance of inclusion across Canada and within the fashion industry through the recognition of talented Black Canadian Designers from coast to coast.  He is pleased to announce the Inaugural Black Designer Award of Excellence.

“This inaugural Award recognizes the many who otherwise would have already been celebrated in a more accessible universe. I believe any Canadian Black designer who has struggled in the face of systemic racism or prejudice has well earned the level of recognition that this Award exemplifies."

The Black Designer Award of Excellence is an acknowledgment of the struggles of Black Designers of Canada and the strength, motivation and commitment it takes to overcome them. Said principal George Sully, “There is a commonality shared by all recipients of this award often having to work twice as hard for less than what’s been offered to others. It has invigorated the community to do better and stand out as unique designers-–that builds excellence. Any Black Canadian designer who has survived designing in the face of these obstacles, including systemic racism, has earned a level of recognition that this Award exemplifies.”

ANNA BINTA DIALLO – ERRANCES / WANDERINGS INSTALLATION
